Another wife pick, Catan Histories: Settlers of America (Trails to Rails) cranks up the difficulty from the original Catan. In fact, the only similarity is that resources are gained by rolling the dice, trading, or purchasing them from the bank. Much like the original, this version leaves you wondering until the bitter end who is actually going to win. This board game certainly ups the challenge and fun but also increases your playtime, so you'll definitely have to block out a decent hour or two (probably two).

Players explore, settle, build, and trade their way across the new world, but the similarities end there. In this version of Catan, wagons and rail lines are now part of the game. Wagons are used to open up new cities, giving access to new resources. The rails are used to acquire gold, used to purchase resources in addition to rolling for them and deliver goods to neighboring cities. Beware, because as players explore the West, the resources from the east are cut off and therefore in low supply. Strategy becomes much more important in this game as each player must play to the strengths for the position at the start of the game.

Overall, the game is slightly challenging to learn because you expect it to be like Catan, but once you pick up the mechanics you can focus on strategizing.
